Witch Finder is a great start to a new series by Ruth Warburton. It takes place in 19th century England, and Warburton does a great job of bringing this setting to life. It is a perfect backdrop for an alternate history where witches are hidden among the populace. The main character Luke is a young working man who takes a job in the stables of a rich household of witches, hoping to kill one of these witches as part of his initiation into a group of witch hunters. Rosa, the young witch he was sent to kill is not far from a typical woman of high society, trying to broker a marriage to save her family. The tale follows Luke’s struggles: he must kill Rosa or his own life is forfeit.
This is a well written and obviously well researched novel. It is also very easy to sympathize with protagonists, while the antagonists are wicked enough to make the story interesting. There is also no real low point to this novel; the story is consistently engaging the whole way through.
This book is a light read, so anyone looking for a an in depth or epic fantasy should look elsewhere. There is also some violence, and YA readers should be aware of this fact. This is not a book for children.
Overall I would give this book an 8/10.
I received a copy if this book from the publisher and Netgalley in return for an honest review.
